Quit the lipstick habit. Lipsticks can contribute to lip darkening, so continued use of them over a long period of time will only make the darkening worse.

If your lips have suddenly gotten darker, there may be factors in your lifestyle to blame, including excessive use of lip color, smoking, and sun exposure. But even if your lips have become extremely dark, there are some home treatments (and lifestyle changes) that may help lighten your lips. Here’s how to get started.

Quit the lipstick habit. Lipsticks can contribute to lip darkening, so continued use of them over a long period of time will only make the darkening worse.

Protect your lips from the sun. You should use sunscreen whenever you’re out in the sun, which can increase the amount of pigment in your lips.

Avoid products that can darken your lips. Cigarettes, coffee, and tea not only stain your teeth — they can also cause dark lips. Quitting smoking and drinking coffee and tea can help you avoid further darkening.

Try a lime and honey treatment. A mixture of lime juice, honey, and glycerine can be a very effective treatment for dark lips. You’ll need to apply it daily for several weeks before you see any positive effects.

Lighten your lips with almonds. Rub on some almond milk or almond oil and let it sit on your lips for at least an hour. Continue using this treatment every day for several weeks.

Consider some other all-natural ingredients. You can also try ingredients like beetroot, pomegranate, or coriander juice to fade dark lips.

Moisturize your lips. Moisturizing your lips can help lighten them. Apply Vaseline, shea butter, or lip balm at night and as needed during the day to help moisturize, condition, and protect your lips.

Apply a little lemon juice. Lemon juice is well known for its skin-lightening abilities. Apply the juice alone or make a paste of equal parts lemon juice, yogurt, and honey and rub it onto your lips. Leave the paste on for a half hour then scrub it off.

Pay your doctor a visit. If home treatments for dark lips aren’t working, make an appointment with your dermatologist or doctor. He or she can prescribe an intensive lightening cream or other treatment to help lighten your lips and return them to a more natural color.
