Maxime Salon in Hingham recently hosted a seemingly

Maxime Salon in Hingham recently hosted a seemingly “unorthodox” type of cancer event.  It was NOT a fundraiser, it was more like a “friend” raiser…it was an evening of beauty, laughter, inspiration and compassion among those who share the bond of cancer.  It was the first in a series of Cancer Workshops entitled, “Cancer Schmancer.”

“The reason we decided to create this series of events was because six of our clients were diagnosed with cancer within two months of each other,” says Ronit Enos, Owner, Maxime Salon.  “We felt we had to do something to help them, and since what we know is beauty, we created an evening where women could come and learn how to maintain their style, and in some cases, create a new style, so they can feel beautiful, even while undergoing treatment.”

When Ronit and her staff first began brainstorming on what shape the workshops would take, they discussed everything from the “language of cancer” — what words are appropriate and comfortable and which ones are not — to figuring out what offerings would be most valuable to these women, what would truly benefit what they are going through.
The ultimate goal, as it was decided, was to provide access to styling tips, skin care and beautiful hair solutions.  Enos hopes to empower women before, during and after treatment to feel good about their looks and have the benefit of shared experience.
“Knowledge is Power,” said Pam Ahl, founder of Learn Live Love Cancer Outreach Organization and co-writer of the local comedy, “MOMologues: Pink Ribbon Overdose,” as she spoke to the women that evening.  “Some people think money is power, but we are here tonight to share knowledge, and that is the single most valuable thing any of us can do to help one another, to share our experience.”
The event was as much about external beauty as it was about learning to feel comfortable with the process of cancer, and losing hair, or not feeling well during treatment.  Women were seated and shared stories with the entire room...it was a large room that took on a very intimate feel.
“Today is a good day to ask questions and share,” said Ronit as she introduced all the experts in the room, including Cindy Doody of Mariposa Massage.  Doody talked about the healing powers of touch, not as cancer cure, but as a way to help the mind/body connection while going through the rigors of treatment.  Doody acknowledge that not all doctors approve massage for their patients and that the area of “alternative” healing is still in it’s infancy when it comes to integrating eastern medical practices with those of western medicine.

Other experts in the their fields included Debbie Macomber of Babyface Skin Care in Hanover.  Macomber gave facials and skin care tips to some of the evening’s attendees.
“Chemotherapy creates sensitive skin. Fragrance can bother people, and patients should not exfoliate their skin during cancer treatment because it easily bruises,” said Macomber.  “There’s a lot to think about, but there are treatments that can help hydrate, sooth and make a woman look and feel her best.”
In addition to hair, makeup and skin, representatives of the The Gaila Fund (gailafund.org) were there to provide each woman with a “Gaila” to take home with them.  The non-profit organization was founded by, Gail Arch, a Hingham resident who wanted a beautiful solution to hair loss during treatment.  The Gaila Fund provides beautiful Gailas “hats” at no charge to cancer patients.
With the outside aesthetics taken care of, the evening turned to the inside, and the understanding that laughter is truly the best medicine. Breast cancer survivors Pam Ahl, Lisa Rafferty and Jane McGovern are co-writers and performers of the “Momlogue: Pink Ribbon Overdose.”  Ahl and McGovern were on hand to infuse the evening with a dose of comedy and candidness.  “Pink Ribbon Overdose” looks at every aspect of cancer through the lens of humor.  “To Wig or not To Wig,” was just one of the many funny perspectives looked at by McGovern.  She had the crowd laughing through tears as she told of how she came to the decision to wear her wig for dinner out one night with her husband.
Cancer Schmancer workshops also help to raise awareness of Learn, Live, Love Cancer Outreach Organization (learnlivelove.org), founded by Scituate residents, Pam Ahl, Rosie Lonborg and Amy Webber.  Learn, Live, Love provides financial assistance to women and families on the South Shore who have been touched by the devastation of cancer.
Maxime Salon hopes that these workshops will help women to endure their treatments with a lighter air.  One attendee, who underwent a double mastectomy in recent months, summed up the positive energy of the women in the room.
